Ecommerce Platform Benchmark 2026: What 80,000 Stores Taught Us

What 80,000 store audits reveal about ecommerce platforms in 2026, and why the platform you pick matters less than what you do with it. For store owners, operators, and anyone weighing an ecommerce platform decision.

Pick almost any ecommerce comparison online and it ends with a winner. We ran the largest technical audit we could and came away with something less tidy and more useful: the platform you choose sets the ceiling of what your store can do, but where you actually land inside that ceiling is mostly up to you. Across the 80,000 stores we audited, the same platform produces both the healthiest stores in the study and some of the most broken ones.

We scanned 80,000 live stores across the four major platforms, 20,000 each, and measured the same technical signals on all of them. Here is what the data says, what it doesn’t, and why the obvious reading of it is the wrong one.

The headline findings

  • Most technical failures are universal, not platform-specific. The ten most common problems show up on every platform, which means the biggest wins are available to almost everyone. (We broke those down separately in the 10 most common ecommerce problems.)
  • The biggest finding is not which platform scores highest, but how far stores diverge inside the same platform. Magento’s spread between its 10th and 90th percentile is more than five times Shopify’s (42 points against 8). The platform sets the ceiling; implementation decides where you land.
  • Across the benchmark sample, roughly 1 in 4 Magento stores and 1 in 3 PrestaShop stores fall into the benchmark’s lowest maturity tier, against only 2 to 3% of stores on the hosted platforms.
  • The four split into two camps: platforms with modern, locked-down defaults (Shopify, Shopware 6), which trade ceiling for consistency, and frameworks built to be configured (Magento 2, PrestaShop), which trade consistency for ceiling.
  • Out-of-the-box scores reward platforms built for non-experts and penalize frameworks built to be configured by experts. That is why the raw leaderboard, taken at face value, misleads.

How we measured it, and where it falls short

The sample is the English-language cluster: 20,000 confirmed live stores per platform, audited in early 2026 with the same automated checks across speed, SEO, AI-readiness, design, and security. A result records whether a signal is present or absent, not its measured impact on any individual store.

Benchmark content earns trust by admitting its limits, so here are this study’s, plainly:

  • The traffic and revenue mismatch. A random pull of Shopify stores skews toward smaller merchants, while Magento skews toward complex, high-catalog operations. The platforms are not carrying comparable businesses.
  • The English-language bias. Shopware is native to the German-speaking market and PrestaShop to the French one. Measuring them in their secondary English markets is a stricter test of international readiness, and probably a less flattering one than their home turf would give.
  • The headless blind spot. The fastest Shopify and Magento builds are often headless architectures that a standard scanner struggles to fingerprint, so some of the best-performing stores are likely missing from the sample.
  • The SaaS security gap. Shopify logs zero server-security issues because there is no server to misconfigure. That is a genuine advantage and a measurement blind spot at the same time: the scan cannot see third-party app and API risk, which is where SaaS exposure actually lives. We report security only for the self-hosted platforms.

The out-of-the-box fallacy

The trap in any platform benchmark is reading the baseline as the verdict. Comparing a self-hosted framework’s out-of-the-box health to a hosted platform’s is like comparing a kit car to a rental: one is sold ready to drive, the other is sold to be built. Magento and PrestaShop are blank-canvas frameworks meant to be configured by professional teams. Scoring them in their unconfigured state measures the floor, not the platform.

The proof is in the spread. The strongest stores in the entire study run on Magento, whose 90th-percentile score of 93.5 is the highest in the benchmark, on the same platform whose 10th percentile sits at 51.2. A framework that can produce both is not better or worse than a hosted platform. It is a different kind of tool, with a higher ceiling and a steeper demand for competent implementation.

Platform health scores: hosted versus self-hosted

With that caveat in place, here is the category health across the four platforms. The figure is the share of stores with no detected issue in that category, so higher is cleaner.

These figures describe how often stores were found in a healthy state, not the inherent quality of the platform. Read across the rows and the structural divide is clear: the platforms with modern, locked-down defaults post high, even scores because those defaults are hard to break, while the frameworks built to be configured post lower and more uneven scores because their defaults are starting points, not finished states.

Two of these numbers deserve an asterisk. Shopware’s lead in AI-readiness is real but partly an accident of timing: it was built in an era when schema markup was already standard, so it inherits modern semantics that older frameworks have to add by hand. And on security, Magento actually posts the highest score of any platform measured, which sits awkwardly with its reputation and underlines how much the out-of-the-box framing distorts the picture.

Consistency versus ceiling: the pattern that matters most

Averages hide the real story. Magento sits at one extreme. Its 42-point spread is the widest in the study, and that is not a flaw, it is the signature of a framework built to be pushed. The same property that produces the highest ceiling produces the lowest floor. Shopify sits at the other: configuration-proof, enforcing a band so narrow that almost every store lands in the same place whether the owner knows what they are doing or not.

The maturity tiers tell the same story from another angle. Sort all 80,000 stores by overall issue density and 12% of Shopify stores and 18% of Shopware stores reach the top tier, against 8% of Magento and 2% of PrestaShop. At the bottom, 22% of Magento stores and 31% of PrestaShop stores fall into the lowest (“broken”) tier, versus 2 to 3% on the hosted platforms. Where each platform pays its bill

Every platform abstracts away some problems and reintroduces others. The four trade-offs, with the data behind them:

Shopify solves infrastructure and taxes you through apps. It is the only platform with zero CDN issues and the best server-response times in the study, yet its app ecosystem drags speed back down: 9,148 stores failed lazy loading and 7,985 failed minification. Its zero security score is not a clean bill of health either, since the SaaS model hides the app and API risk the scan cannot reach.

Magento carries the most debt at baseline and the most headroom once configured. It has the highest broken-tier rate of the self-hosted platforms and fails browser caching natively on thousands of stores, yet it also posts the study’s highest ceiling and its strongest security score. It is the platform that most rewards a capable team and most punishes the absence of one.

Shopware is the most consistent modern framework, helped by a recent codebase. It is best-in-class on several individual signals, from minification to GDPR consent to heading structure, and leads on AI-readiness. Its weak spots are in the storefront rather than the machine-readable layer, most visibly thousands of stores missing a shipping calculator at checkout.

PrestaShop carries the widest modernization gap: the lowest baseline scores, the highest broken-tier share, and heavy failure rates on email authentication and modern image formats. That gap is also the opportunity, since most of it is mechanical, well-understood work rather than deep re-architecture.

What it means for your store

The instinct after a benchmark is to ask which platform won. The more useful question is what the spread implies for your own decision. Platform choice sets the ceiling of what is possible. Implementation decides where inside that ceiling you actually land. And the failures that show up most often, the universal neglect list, are fixable on any platform regardless of which one you run.

Where that leaves you depends less on the scores than on your resources. With a capable engineering team, a high-ceiling framework rewards the investment, as long as someone actively owns the configuration. Without one, a hosted platform’s higher floor is worth more than a higher ceiling you cannot reach. On any platform, the universal failures are the cheapest wins available, which is the opposite of the usual platform-comparison conclusion: for most merchants, the platform decision matters less than it seems, and the configuration decision matters more.

This benchmark is the same audit we run on individual stores, so the scan behind these numbers is the one you can point at your own.
